MAYOR TO SWEAR-IN NEW MEMBER OF NEW HAVEN BOARD OF EDUCATION

(1/12/2009) NEW HAVEN- At this evening’s regular meeting of the New Haven Board of Education, Mayor John DeStefano, Jr. will swear in Elizabeth Torres as the newest member of the New Haven Board of Education.

Torres is presently the Executive Director of the Bridgeport Neighborhood Trust, a non-profit community housing development organization. Torres specializes in strengthening neighborhoods by embracing a holistic revitalization approach through advocacy, education, investment and technical support with the goal of improving the quality of life for families that reside in the Bridgeport area. The Bridgeport Neighborhood Trust provides affordable housing and services to families to ensure long term stability. Prior to her service as Executive Director Torres worked as a Program Manager for Community Builders, Inc. in New Haven.

“Elizabeth Torres will bring a wealth of knowledge and interest in community building to the Board of Education. Her skill set and experience will benefit the Board as we continue to improve opportunities for our students and build stronger bridges with parents and the community,” said DeStefano.

Torres’ appointment is for a term of 4 years and she fills the vacancy of Frances Padilla whose term limit had expired.
